Booklet / online – poetic expression

Booklet / online. This week a choice of words or using both.
It seems there was a natural connection between the words. Hope you enjoy where the words took us.
If you would like to share an hour that explores poems and words, and opens up and expands ideas, we’d love you to join in with our discussions.

Next week’s word is ‘mouse’.

Hope to see you there.

Magazines

I grew up with magazines
They reflected the life I lived
My mother loved her special treats
The English Women’s Weekly each week
This was not to my teenage taste
I preferred Go Set in my teens
A publication that set the pace
Molly Meldrum secured its place
As the bible of my musical headspace
All the Aussie bands I went to see
At nightspots now disappeared
My introduction to pop stars
Who later in life I got to interview
Even my Doctor became a star
He had a column in Woman’s Day
Yes many magazines have remained
Their impact still lives on in me
I notice online versions keep appearing
Though I no longer look for them
The mastheads I represented
Kept me in food and a place to call home
I owe a lot to these magazines

Postcards

These days I can find so much information online
Reading digital books
Listening to audios
Watching YouTube piano tutorials
And saving reminders online so I can access them anywhere
But there’s one thing it cannot replace
Physical postcards
I have a whole wall of them in my bedroom
I love the special feeling when I open the mailbox
Finding a postcard lying there quietly
What a surprise!
Those handwritings have the magic to bring me back straight to the person who sent it
I have two favorite ones
One is from my little nephew
He sent it when he was on The Ghan
My cousin wrote the message on behalf of him
Our train just departed
Auntie, I hope you will always be happy
I love it when you hug me
He drew two people
One is him and the other one is me
Simple message
But I felt a very precious and innocent love within
It’s a family love
The other one is from one of my friends Denise
She made me a card
The purple background painted a dreamy feel
There were a few red houses and a snowman in front of a big Christmas tree
Inside it was her Christmas gift for me
A long message
And one line even made me teary
You are such an inspiration
Stay true to yourself and know I will always have your back
Whenever I need confidence and comfort
I would read this message again and again
It gives me strength to move forward
It’s a friend’s love
I think this traditional medium will always have its place in this big and modern world.

Honesty

I found some booklets
From many years ago
Of the handwritten notes, lists and realizations
That I had used to capture
My life
They told a story
The planning for family dinners
The intentions I set
For the day the week
The inspirations and ideas that arrived
As I reflected I realised
These booklets
Brought an honesty
Seen in the fonts, the bolds, the size
The doodles, tea stains, the smells, folds and creases
Clues about the emotion
Feeling fierce, at peace
In a hurry, in a flurry
I could see how I moved
Through the ups and downs
Learning much along the way
To arrive at being ok
Unlike what is happening  online today
With the sharing of life
In a way that can fool
