Darn with Plarn – Save our Planet
Background
Darn with ‘plarn’ is an environmental and social community project that anyone can contribute to at any time, in many ways.
While the end game is no more plastic produced, we know that so much is still on the planet. Rather than end up in land fill, where it eventually affects our earth, waterways and all things connected to it, most significantly our food chain, this simple way of reusing the plastic bags, can keep it away from our beautiful natural environment.
We know that people are looking at ways to help, and this may be something you feel you can do. YOu could contribute to the project by:
- collecting plastic bags
- clearing out any food items from the bags
- folding and flattening the bag
- cutting strips and balling up the ‘plarn’
- dropping off to any drop off spots around the city (see below)
- utilising the plarn – to crotchet squares, lengths or items
Currently we pass on the plarn to a few people in this community, who make mats for those people sleeping rough. This was an idea we heard about from a group in America, and felt it would be valuable here. We have shared the mats with organisations who help out rough sleepers, especially on cold and wet nights.
The plarn can also be used to create items for personal use, such as pillows, mats, bags, bowls and more.
We have passed mats on to:
- Southern Homeless Action Group
- Baptist Care
- Hutt Street Centre
This project has been engaged by schools, Girl Guides, individuals and groups.

Save our planet
We love to bring our Darn with Plarn project to communities, however the cause that underpins the project, is to SAVE OUR PLANET.
For this reason, we support and encourage innovations of any kind and we look forward to moving with what positively influences and impacts saving our environment.
It’s about the small things, and we love to share some of those in the events we run and communities we connect with.
