Mouse. The word for the week.
It’s amazing where a word can lead us. What comes up for us. Often feelings, thoughts, creations and ideas we hardly know exist. How wonderful to discover something unique.
Something so small, led to a large amount of creativity and insight.
If you would like to share an hour that explores poems and words, and opens up and expands ideas, we’d love you to join in with our discussions.
Next week’s word is ‘ice’.
Hope to see you there.

Mouse
My name is Klaus
I’m your common mouse
Here is my story
I share around eighty percent
Of my genetics with you
Similar immunology
And physiology to some extent
I’ve been bred in a laboratory
Experimented on endlessly
All to benefit humanity
My family In-laws and cousins
All bred specifically
To satisfy humans curiosity
Our genes are manipulated
Stimulated traits collated
To discover any defect
We have no power to object
Our voices are never heard
Our pain is ignored
Never given a choice
Nor treated with respect
Scientists and researchers
Justify their industry
Is to better the human species
Surely now in this age of technology
Their findings can be on AI machinery
Instead of using me and my family
We have committed no crime
Yet you take away our liberty
Keeping us caged all the time
Free us from this indignity
So we can live in the fields
Wherever we might find a home
And live out our normal life needs
My name is Klaus
I’m a common mouse
Please set me and family free
And cease this cruelty

Is Mouse Good or Bad?
I don’t think Chinese people like mouse or rat
We call them the same-老鼠(lǎoshǔ)
And you can tell from our proverbs
Here are some examples and there are no good ones
过街老鼠人人喊打when a rat crosses the street, people chase it down
胆小如鼠as timid as a mouse
贼眉鼠眼 thievish-looking, literally means thieving eyebrows and rat eyes
鼠目寸光shortsighted, literally means a mouse can see only an inch ahead
What about the western world?
Not much better after checking mouse related English expressions
But someone changed history
He created Mickey Mouse
A well-loved classic cartoon character
Full of joy, innocence, and adventure
Maybe we can find good and beauty in anything and everything
Do you agree?

Mouse Point
As I read about the word for the week – mouse
I looked up to see a sign to Mouse Point
How uncanny that while travelling along a road in the South Island of NZ
This word collided at a single point in time
So often things happen that way!
Like the moment while on the trip,
a rental car travelling behind us
turned around upon news of a road closure ahead
Then…
After 7 days and thousands of kilometers in between how is it
that we park next to each other at a campsite
Sharing the same story?
Coincidence or synchronicity
The amazing way things flow in and out of our lives
Definitely something to marvel at
