The power of freely giving

We thought we’d share this story from Peter, who is a regular contributor on our weekly poetic expression session on Monday evenings. Peter would often chat about Jack, a 98 year old, who he connected with each week as part of a volunteer connection program with the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care.

It is now wonderful for us, to meet Jack via this video, and hear about the benefits of this wonderful connection.

We know the powerful gains of volunteering especially when you truly love what you are doing. It is evident with Peter and Jack, there was a match, resulting in a mutually beneficial and truly rewarding experience all round, which I’m sure you will see from the video below.

Freely sharing the things you love to do while giving to others and the community, is something that brings many of our and other volunteers, ‘feel good’ and positive emotions.

People from Knit a Care Square, who knit squares and do other tasks that result in beautiful blankets, are doing what they love. At the same time, the people who receive the blankets, are feeling the love.

And then there is Paul Oswald, who volunteers in the ‘Singing for Fun’ and Mardiyah Salam who volunteers her time and skills to run ‘tai chi’ for participants. Their passion generates a glow, in and around them.

During some stages in our lives, we may have demands where we feel we don’t have time to give freely in this way.

However when there is space, it may be the time to ask yourself ‘what would I love to do more of’ or ‘what would bring me some feel good emotions’ or ‘what would make my heart sing’?

In need not be in a formal way… it could be in a small way, within your every day. What could that be for you?
