Button – poetic expression

‘Button’ – while we all thought it an unusual word, it certainly opened our creative connections.
While not all our poems are presented here, we did hear some beautiful ways that the word button, was woven into stories and metaphors.
We recognise that every word, takes us somewhere.
When you think about the number of words you hear each day (from others or yourself), it’s no wonder, we can often feel like we are in a whirl pool, being taken in so many directions.
I suppose it reminds me that words can heal, and words can also feel like weapons. It’s a good reminder to notice the impact of words you are surrounded by.
Where does the word button take you? What does it conjure for you?
We hope you enjoy the poems.
These weekly sessions provide the chance to express through writing, poems, or conversation. The word usually conjures so many powerful themes that we discuss throughout.
The word next week is ‘rock’.
Hope to see you there.

The Conference

When a lady – unknown to me,
asked to sit at our table
(on chairs I had saved for others yet to arrive)
instead of doing the usual territorial thing
 I said ‘yes of course’

We found a way to squish in a couple of extra people.
I could see she was grateful

Choosing to share with her that day,
Began the flow of this special gift…

You see…
I presented a 10 minute snap shot on posture that day.
At the end of the session
I gave everyone a button –
As a reminder to keep good posture
and feel the benefits…

While doing that – something strange happened.
The tiny white button on the bottom of my shirt, popped off!
I thought ‘how uncanny’
The participants also expressed the irony
Losing a button as I was giving a button?

Unfortunately while packing up the session –
my button disappeared amongst a huge pile of things –
and being so small –
I felt sure I’d never see it again.

Then… at the end of the day,
Conference over,
I was about to leave  the carpark
I could see the lady from our table,
wave me down excitedly…
You won’t believe why…

She had found my button!

TLaB 2nd October 23

Maybe

Bang! Was that a shot?
Running post haste, I see
the victim on the ground
Looking for clues on this vast estate
None to be found

Oh dear- it’s the master, Mr Jeffreys
Gun in right hand, suicide maybe?
He is known to be left-handed
A murder’s been committed
You can’t trick me

It could be one of many
My suspicion falls on the gardener
He has those mysterious eyes
Always observing
Butt-on the other hand…

Could it be his wife?
She stood to gain a fortune
Definitely had the personality
To plan such a dastardly deed
Butt-on the other hand…

Could it be the new maid?
They were having an affair!
Seen to be having words
after dinner, yes it’s her
Butt-on the other hand…

Here comes Inspector Jap
Strutting across the lawn
I’m only hear for appearance
As he’s never impressed with interference
He stoops to retrieve a button

Mrs Jeffreys follows
A button missing from her vest
Case closed I say
Butt-on the other hand…
