River – poetic expression

‘River’ – what type of river jumps out at you? As a metaphor, a river can be or relate to so many things.
What it brings; its beauty, its purpose, its pain, its joy, its message, its love, its sadness, its fear… so many possibilities looming near.
Always changing, shifting, moving… is it still, flowing, or growing?
What is it for you?
Hope you enjoy these expressions, which were inspired by different things. For Stella, the inspiration came from a picture.
For others it was a memory, a feeling, an experience.
These weekly sessions provide the chance to express through writing, poems, or conversation. The word usually conjures so many powerful themes that we discuss throughout.
The word next week is ‘Button’.
Hope to see you there.

River

(Listen to Peter’s audio of the poem)

An endless information river
At our fingertips
Within easy reach
Simple to teach
Stored on memory chips

Knowledge flowing at high speed
Downloaded to be
Read viewed or heard
Saved or transferred
For anyone to perceive

At any time I can dip my toe
Into this current of data streams
I can retrieve that spot
In case I have forgot
What it was on my computer screens

Here lies the future of humankind.
Will all these bits and bytes
Flood and break the riverbanks
What humans thought to be sacrosanct?
Does it cause you sleepless nights?

The Mighty Murray

Coasting along the Murray
In a houseboat so luxurious
Such a vast variety of natures grandeur
I’m curious
Stop at towns along the way
We wave and absorb the splendour
As I chat to the locals
I envy their chosen way,
How fortunate they are to live
Beside one of natures true gifts

Oh look! So many pelicans
Delicate and calming
Looking quite at home
On this magnificent river we share
Feel the slow breeze, the warmth of the sun
The Mighty Murray River observing me
With such a sigh of contentment
As we peacefully meander along

Tears of My Existence

Sometimes
Flowing uncontrollably

Salty to taste
Trickling from my eyes

Filling with sadness
Gushing without warning

Feeding the unleashing
Of my heart’s pain

Watering the systems
That sustain me

Journeying through
My past

Flooding the plains
Of my existence

Emptying the build up
Over time

Cycling in and out
With memories of you

My river of tears

Falling into
The ocean of life

Yearning…
