Fairy blues
They found their perfect place
For their colony to support their race
To feel safe and sound
Knowing humans weren’t around
Â
Nestled in the rocksÂ
Close to the docks
Their eggs were laidÂ
With enough cover to shade
Â
As they warmed, they hatched
And the baby penguins detachedÂ
Patiently waiting for darkness to arriveÂ
For mother’s return, with her catch – the prizeÂ
Excited tourists would wait tooÂ
To witness the return of the fairy bluesÂ
But sadly with the ocean temperature riseÂ
Only fear is now heard in the babies’ criesÂ
For despite their attempts at foraging for ocean foodÂ
The adult penguins had nothing accruedÂ
These penguins no longer return at nightÂ
Giving locals much concern for their plightÂ
It’s now been many long weeksÂ
Where the safe home on Bicheno beachÂ
Is no longer the place for this usual routine
Where this wonderful act of nature was once seen
Our hearts bleed…
And the world asks why?Â
