Horror aboard…
It shocked the world
The images that brought us to tears
The slimy coat of oil covering turtles and
Other winged birds and marine life
It started with toxic fumes from the engines of oil ships
But as they lost grip during a storm
There came the cries
And the panic as the ship
In the Black Sea, disappeared
Sparking the greatest of fears
A huge ecological disaster
For years ever after
And even from space
The enormity of the disgrace
Such bad taste for the place
We call home…

Two Russian oil tankers were wrecked and suffered massive oil spills in the Kerch Strait of the Black Sea during a severe storm. The Volgoneft-212 split in half and sank while carrying 4,300 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, and the Volgoneft-239 ran aground after sustaining damage, contaminating miles of the Russian coastline.
The incident, which occurred near the Crimean peninsula, prompted a state of emergency from Russian authorities and drew international attention from environmentalists. Operations in the Kerch Strait are a critical global shipping route connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

What a Relief
scurrying along the darkened street
slimy wet leaves under my feet
the rain is torrential
i struggle to balance my umbrella
against the harrowing wind
a passing bus spews out gagging fumes
they pierce my nostrils
i panic and almost slip
with a sense of relief
i reach my front door
stepping inside dripping wet and cold
startled, I awake in my bed
pull the blanket over my head
Feeling the warmth of home
