Just for the thrill

Who thinks it’s ok to kill
Wild elephants
Just for the thrill
The ivory steal

How ugly the thought
Is that what is taught
That just for fun
It’s ok to use a gun

And then there’s the tale
of the blue whale
killed because of greed
Is their oil really such a need

And then just for a pearl
Oysters shells are affected
Even though they say they are protected

But now these industries
Are changing the chemistry
Of the land and the sea
Where is the sovereignty ?

How can we, for our own desire
Change the entire
Ecology
To use and abuse
To such a degree as we
can now see
By the dead fish and algae

Where do we start
How far back do we go
To show how gloat
That ‘floats your boat’
Has led to this!
No it’s not  bliss
Rather a disaster!

Something is amiss

So let’s give these creatures
A safe place and home
So that they can
become free to roam

Because the more aware
And care we bring
The more our hearts
can truly sing

TLaB 1st September 2025

And all that Jazz

Gagging smoke floats in the air
Locals mesmerised by the bass
Trumpet saxophone
And vigorous fingers
Gliding over ivory keys
Four gifted friends follow their passion
The music is soul searching
The sounds are so exclusive
Regulars flock from all around
To such a small venue underground
In that basement the beat is unique
What a pearl of a song
As they all jam along
Till the wee small hours
When the sun has long gone

A Pearl in their Palm

Did you know that in China,
if parents truly love their daughter,
we don’t say she’s “the apple of their eye”?
Instead, we say she is 掌上明珠 – literally, a pearl in their palm.

But growing up, I never felt like that.
My dad rarely spent time with me,
and I was convinced,
I was just a blade of grass resting in his hand.

Recently, though, my perspective has shifted
Thanks to learning about the six love languages and my last two visits to China.

When I desperately needed money to travel to Europe,
Dad quietly handed me some money without me even asking.
This surprised me,
because he had always said,
“Once you turn 18, you shouldn’t ask your parents for money anymore.”

Another time,
after hearing my uncle mention the kind of lollies his daughter bought for her colleagues,
Dad came home with a bag of those exact lollies for me.

Yes, these are small gestures – practical, material things.
Not my favourite kind of love.
But somehow, they touched me deeply.
They told me: he listened
And in that listening, I felt his care.
That was priceless.
