Fairy blues
They found their perfect place
For their colony to support their race
To feel safe and sound
Knowing humans weren’t around
Nestled in the rocks
Close to the docks
Their eggs were laid
With enough cover to shade
As they warmed, they hatched
And the baby penguins detached
Patiently waiting for darkness to arrive
For mother’s return, with her catch – the prize
Excited tourists would wait too
To witness the return of the fairy blues
But sadly with the ocean temperature rise
Only fear is now heard in the babies’ cries
For despite their attempts at foraging for ocean food
The adult penguins had nothing accrued
These penguins no longer return at night
Giving locals much concern for their plight
It’s now been many long weeks
Where the safe home on Bicheno beach
Is no longer the place for this usual routine
Where this wonderful act of nature was once seen
Our hearts bleed…
And the world asks why?
