So how do we broaden the information we gather to get a more balanced view?
This is where statistics and data from those with non commercial interests, to gain a more holistic picture. This information (that is built on facts rather than opinion) is observed and compared to previous data to better validate (without bias) the actual incidence and prevalence.
Hence as data is collected from a broader range of variables, there becomes more ‘dots’ available to better project possible emerging trends and patterns of behaviours.
Mathematicians such as Peter Turchin (known as The Man Who Counts Collapses) built mathematical models of animal populations at the beginning of his career. Around the turn of the century he began to ask that question around human populations.
He studied hundreds of societies across 10,000 years (including Roman Republic, Imperial China, pre-revolutionary France) and recorded the conditions that preceded the breakdowns. He indicated that his work, was not prophecy, rather modelling feedback that is repeated with alarming regularity.
