about… zero… seize… beacon… mystery… decay…
Here are the range of words chosen before the break, to guide us with our regular writing practice.
Having words to write about, opens us up to how we can incorporate themes, stories, memories, issues or challenges, in ways that we may never have imagined.
Another way to expand our expression, and bring out what lies beneath the surface.
Hope you enjoy these expressions for the week.
Visit our events calendar for the sessions.
We will now be running our sessions on the first and third Monday of the month.
Hope to see you at a session.
Next fortnights’s words are: Echo and Wander

Zero
I was surprised when I saw him
Knees obviously giving him troubleÂ
Transferring weight with difficulty
Hobbling in a way that really did say
Something about the pain he was feeling
I was surprised when I saw himÂ
Lighting up a cigarette and reassuring himself
It was only occasional so no need to worry
They were ‘lights’, so that made it ‘alright’
Though I could see the addictive delightÂ
I was surprised when I saw himÂ
Unable to breathe as he coughed with difficultyÂ
It runs in the family – was his talkÂ
A reason he gave – for being unable to walk
I was surprised when I saw himÂ
Drinking Coke ZeroÂ
Without sugar was the attractionÂ
Or perhaps more the distractionÂ
From the other harms in disguiseÂ
That removed all sense of wiseÂ
I was surprised when I saw him
At how we are easily lured
Fooled by the lies that are there to demise
Taking away the freedom to truly care
Or dare to do it differentlyÂ
I was surprised when I saw him
At how easy it has been
For our race to lose faceÂ
In this crowded placeÂ
Our worldÂ
The disgrace of the chase
SeizeÂ
Walking around the lake
I wanted to seize the moment
Take it all inÂ
My head was in a spin
Looking out at the view
With the sky so blue
Garden designs with such hue
Cobblestone paths so enchanting
Historical quaintnessÂ
Ancient walls protectingÂ
Remnants still remainÂ
Of the past so grandÂ
Ours to enjoy
And to notice
And to feel the relevanceÂ
Of what the past has disclosedÂ
Are we able to listen
Are we able to learnÂ
Are we able to appreciateÂ
Are we able to protectÂ
And bring our focus to what matters
To ensure the magic remainsÂ
for our future generations to gain
MysteryÂ
Sometimes I don’t know whyÂ
I’d rather be aloneÂ
Without my phoneÂ
Sometimes I don’t know whyÂ
I’d rather not join inÂ
And pretend with a grinÂ
Sometimes I don’t know why
I sit in my painÂ
And feel my disdainÂ
Sometimes I don’t know whyÂ
I sit in silence and peaceÂ
For a little reliefÂ
Sometimes I don’t know why
I feel I don’t belongÂ
That something is wrongÂ
Sometimes I don’t know whyÂ
I find myself againÂ
And without strain
Feel the lightÂ
Enjoy the delightÂ
Of all things big and smallÂ
TLaB 5th May 2025

Squalls are About
Darkness hangs low over the bay
A beacon is pulsing out
To show some light
in the path of a decaying storm
Find protection from the cutting wind
Seize shelter from the belting rain
With the temperature almost zero
Confess that I’m no hero
So fearful of the misery of the night
Many hours passed
Then the calmness came at last
Just like the mystery of magic
One moment it’s there
Then it has disappeared
