The power of knitting on wellbeing

The power of knitting on wellbeing

I have been watching my grandson wrap himself up in his favourite ‘blankey’… Yes that’s right, the one I knitted lovingly over the year (or two!)

It was the best feeling – watching the comfort he received from the hand crafted blanket. I laughed with happiness as he rolled around in it and then dragged it around the house like a favourite toy!

3 blankets for 3 grandsons done!

After watching a video on Face Book, of a terminally ill man knitting hats for the homeless, it got me thinking about how little it really takes to create something special for someone and how good it actually feels along the way.

Watch that video here from Face Book

And how when you have purpose that is meaningful and helpful for others – it is so uplifting…

That’s what wellbeing is all about.

And it can be from something simple and small –

So what if we all just did something small like knit just one square and ‘grow’ blankets together, for those who may be in need of warmth for winter?

How great would that be?

And with the help of friends and colleagues, the project was ignited!

It has now trickled out to the community.

So many are loving what it is bringing to their lives.

One of team members, Kay MacKenzie receives hundreds of squares from participants of her Fitness classes she runs in the community.

As she collects squares from people far and wide, she even stops for a ‘chat and a cuppa!’

She says its wonderful to hear the stories about how knitting the squares, has helped each of them in some way.

She’s had comments like, ‘it has improved my arthritis’, ‘I stopped eating junk after dinner because I had something else to do!’, ‘I’ve always wanted to do something for the community,’ ‘It has given me something really worthwhile to be part of, ‘ and so many more!

Amazingly the ‘threads’ that weave through this group, are joining more than blankets.

This project now belongs to the community, as each person plays a vital role in making it all happen.

And it’s growing. As each new idea emerges from the community, a lovely new part unfolds.
